Staff Attorney – Bronx Borough Coordinator

Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT) is seeking a talented and experienced Staff Attorney – Bronx Borough Coordinator to join our team. 


Based primarily out of the Bronx County Family Court (located at 900 Sheridan Avenue in the Bronx), the Staff Attorney will provide direct support to families in the Court by working one-on-one with those facing Family Court issues through court preparation meetings with pro se litigants and by answering legal and procedural inquiries for all Site visitors. The Staff Attorney reports to the Legal Director and works closely with the Legal Programs Manager.


LIFT is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance access to justice for children and families by providing legal information, community education, and compassionate guidance, while promoting system-wide reform of the courts and public agencies. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Bronx Family Court: 

  • Provide legal information, advice, and compassionate guidance to litigants in Family Court;
  • Conduct participant intake to ascertain legal issues and determine program eligibility;
  • Help prepare program participants for court proceedings through mock trial activities and connection to other LIFT programs and services;
  • Create and maintain thorough, accurate, and current case management notes;
  • Collect and report on participant data and narratives;
  • Distribute, track, and maintain LIFT’s Legal Resource Guides supply in the court;
  • Conduct outreach and participant recruitment throughout the courthouse and in the community;
  • Attend Family Court meetings on behalf of LIFT and provide updates on courthouse activities to the LIFT management team;
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and trainings at LIFT’s central office in downtown Brooklyn and occasionally in other NYC boroughs; and
  • Train and supervise court-based interns and volunteers.


Other duties:

  • Under the direction of the Legal Director, serve as the point person for the updating of LIFT’s legal resource guides and research into new areas for LIFT materials;
  • Expand LIFT’s networks of partnerships and services in the Bronx;
  • Present at Know-Your-Rights presentations and other outreach efforts throughout New York City;
  • Provide legal advice through LIFT’s virtual Family Legal Connection and in person through Court and community-based efforts;
  • Serve as a program liaison and support for other court and non-court based programmatic activities, and development activities, as requested; and
  • Serve as an ambassador for all LIFT programs throughout the courthouse and in the community.
  • Train and supervise court-based interns and volunteers.



Qualifications:

  • J.D. and New York bar admission required. Candidates who are pending admission are encouraged to apply;
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred. Candidates who are fluent in languages other than English are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in Family Law, increasing access to justice, and providing services to the public;
  • Demonstrated autonomy and ability to self-manage and motivate;
  • Critical thinking skills and informed decision-making;
  • Commitment to providing high quality, compassionate service;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently;
  • Attention to detail; and
  • Professional, proactive, and enthusiastic team player.
